Harrick Plasma → Applications → Characterization → QCM-D →
Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) detects nanogram changes in mass and softness at a sensor surface. That sensitivity cuts both ways: a few nanometers of leftover organics from storage, handling or the last experiment shift the baseline and change how the next layer adsorbs. A short low-pressure plasma treatment removes that residue and leaves a clean, hydrophilic surface in minutes. Harrick Plasma users have published more than 140 papers that plasma-clean QCM and QCM-D sensors, listed below.
A typical cleaning routine
Most published protocols follow the same pattern:
- Rinse the sensor in water and ethanol (or a 2% SDS solution first, for used sensors).
- Dry under a stream of nitrogen.
- Treat in air or oxygen plasma for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Mount the sensor or start functionalization right away.
This routine appears throughout supported lipid bilayer studies (Kawakami et al. 2017; Sut et al. 2020; Shin et al. 2025) and protein adsorption work (Park et al. 2017, 2018). Heavily contaminated or reused sensors are treated longer, from 10 to 20 minutes (Mohan et al. 2021; Dhanasekaran et al. 2017).
Supported lipid bilayers
Vesicle rupture and bilayer formation on silica need a clean, uniformly hydrophilic surface. Plasma treatment just before use is the standard preparation for membrane studies on silica, titania and gold sensors, including bicelle-mediated bilayers (Sut et al. 2020), tethered membranes (Park et al. 2020) and antimicrobial lipid interactions (Yoon et al. 2015).
Protein adsorption and antifouling coatings
A plasma-cleaned sensor gives every run the same reference surface. Researchers use it to compare how serum albumins adsorb and passivate silica (Park et al. 2017; Ma et al. 2020), and to prepare silica sensors for APTES functionalization before immune complement studies (Janco et al. 2018).
Layer-by-layer films and polymer brushes
Plasma gives gold and silica sensors a uniform charge and hydroxyl density, so the first layer forms evenly. The Grunlan group cleans Ti/Au crystals before building nanobrick-wall gas-barrier films (Priolo et al. 2010), and the Thormann group cleans silica sensors with water-vapor plasma before studying responsive copolymers and biobased adhesives (Zajforoushan Moghaddam et al. 2017; Qie et al. 2024).
Beyond biointerfaces
The same step supports surfactant adsorption studies for enhanced oil recovery on silica, alumina and calcite-coated sensors (Mohan et al. 2021; Liu et al. 2021), slip measurements at vibrating solid-liquid interfaces (Payam et al. 2022) and, on titanium and stainless steel sensors, spider-silk coatings (Hedhammar 2017). Plasma can also tune the sensing layer itself, raising the sensitivity of palladium-coated quartz resonators for hydrogen detection (Zhou et al. 2021); see our Microcantilever and Resonator Sensors note.
Typical starting conditions
- Gas: air or oxygen to clean and hydroxylate; argon for a non-oxidizing clean (Behn et al. 2010).
- Time: 1 to 2 minutes for routine cleaning; 5 to 20 minutes for heavily contaminated or reused sensors.
- Power: medium to high RF setting.
- Timing: use or functionalize the sensor right after treatment, before it picks up contamination from the air.
- Coatings: plasma removes organic material, so do not treat polymer-coated sensors unless you mean to strip the coating.
